Stalker - Director's Notes

I have to credit the basic idea for Stalker to my friend Jack, who may not even remember that he was the first to suggest the idea of doing a documentary that followed a Stalker. I remember that after he told me the initial idea, I took it and went in another direction, and he wasn't too happy with the first script. But this was literally several years ago, and I totally forgot about it until recently, when I needed to shoot a short film for a class and wasn't coming up with any good ideas.

The way we filmed it was, Michael, the lead actor, would read the script only moments before performing the scene. He'd then basically improv what he'd just read, and add any bits that he wanted to. A lot of the jokes in the film are his as made up on the spot (though the panty sniffing thing is all mine, baby!). I had a great time making up fake movie posters for the actress, Jennifer Rose, and Leslie Moore was more than willing to go the distance to get the different shots we needed.

In the end, I think the major problem with the film is that, at times, there's too much "talking head." Like, there are moments when it's all documentary, and that's the best stuff. Then there's scene after scene after scene of Michael talking, and the lack of change gets to be a bit much. It's totally my fault, of course, but it's a lot harder to make something look made-up and real than you'd imagine. However, I'm nearly certain that Christopher Guest, director of Best In Show and other mockumentaries, may use the same acting method as I did. Special thanks go out to Carl Rosenthal and Philip Moyer, who were willing to go out in the cold to do some very long takes in not that much clothing. I am forever appreciative!
